The Forge Island is the flagship development for RMBC occupying a prime waterside location in the heart of Rotherham. The development provides an 8-screen cinema, 69-bed hotel, 5no F&B units, a new pedestrian bridge, 340no car park spaces and public realm connecting to the wider town centre.

A peninsula site between the River Don and Rotherham Canal, its location presented many significant logistical challenges in the planning, design and construction stages. Working closely with Council’s planners, regeneration, asset and environmental teams, its JV development partner and Tenants a scheme was designed which met their many and diverse objectives. The site’s history of widespread flooding in 2007 and 2019 presented strategic challenges for the designers, constructors and operators. Due to the site’s industrial heritage a strategic decision was made to carry out archaeological investigation and enabling works contracts prior to main works commencing, thus ensuring the overall schedule was not delayed.
